Speaking of an unusual meal I had, the first one that comes into my mind was a seafood hotpot. Well, you know, I come from Sichuan where the traditional hotpot was created. Anyone who says hotpot, it means to me only a Sichuan hotpot with a spicy soup base.

About two years ago, my friend and I went to a newly-opened Thailand restaurant in downtown. We went there because of their famous seafood hotpot. Like I mentioned, when it comes to hotpot, the only flavor that I could think of is a spicy base. But it really surprised me when the waiter poured a bottle of coconut milk into the pot. I thought I could not stand the flavor, because I hadn’t had any meals with a sweet base.

Again, it was not sweet but pretty delicious when fresh seafood was put into the pot, especially the crab. It was so soft and just melted in my mouth with its original seafood flavor and the sauce I had outside. Besides, I had so many other seafoods that I could not name them, it was really a different experience for me.

As for why it was unusual, I gotta say I am actually very conservative with what I eat. I hardly try foreign dishes and I thought they didn't taste as good as our traditional Chinese cuisine. But this time, it changed my mind about seafood. Maybe next time, I would try another Malaysian restaurant in the down.

1. Well, there are a lot of pros and cons. The first one, I think, is quality and flavor. I mean, restaurants have professional chefs making different kinds of cuisines. The quality of their dishes is absolutely perfect and flavor is definitely suitable for your taste. And that's also the reason why we pay for that. Another advantage is that all you need to do in a restaurant is to enjoy the service. You don't have to worry about washing dishes or cleaning the table, just like you do in your own home, so service is a good part of eating in restaurants. As for the disadvantages, I think the price is probably a thing that everyone considers. A good restaurant does offer all the good things I mentioned, but it really costs a lot of money for a meal. So if you are not  rich enough, eating in restaurants could not be a forever thing.

2. Fast food? I believe the fast food shops are all the same around world, there were no exceptions in China. When you walk on the street, especially in those first-tier cities like Shanghai, Beijing or Chengdu. McDonald, KFC, burger king and Subway are everywhere. By the way, Chinese people also love these fast foods. Some Chinese food companies even imitated these famous brands and make their own fast food.

3. Yeah, why not? Not everyone has plenty of time to cook. For those busy with their work, even when they get home, they gotta continue to work. Fast food is their first choice. Of course, eating too much is definitely not a good thing for their health.

4. Well, there are several reasons why people choose to eat out. I think the first reason is people like to have their meals in the right atmosphere. I mean, a nice and cozy environment just makes them feel good and eat more. Some restaurants have nice views of mountains or lakes, and have professional singers or pianists performing at the site, which is pretty cool eating in such places. Another reason is important, too. Like I mentioned, service is another thing you can get in restaurants, you have someone pouring wine for you, cleaning the table for you and so on. All you need to do is eat and enjoy.

5. Yeah, sure. Chinese restaurants are not just places to eat. They are also places where you can drink tea and coffee, play mahjong and even sing karaoke, so they are definitely places for Chinese people to socialize. Merchants like to talk about their businesses with their partners in restaurants. Some elderly people enjoy spending their afternoon tea time playing cards there too.

6. Yes, definitely. I mean, China is a vast country with at least 8 famous cuisines in eight areas. These cuisines represent the local history and culture and local residents' cookery styles and skills. One of the famous ones is Sichuan Cuisine. Sichuan dishes feature a spicy and fresh style. And there are many more styles in Cantonese cuisine. Anyway, Chinese people love the food culture pretty well.
