The diagram clearly illustrates the changes in the percentages of four ages groups in the young population in the UK, encompassing the period from 1990 to 2001.
Generally, the figures showed an overall rise for the two groups of teenagers aged 5-14 while those for the other two cohorts dropped.
Infants (0-4) constituted the most significant proportion of young people for the first half of this period. It stood at around 26% between 1990 and 2005, before dropping gradually to approximately 23.5% in 2001. By contrast, the percentage of those aged 10-14 commenced with the lowest 23% but then surged drastically to over26%, finally exceeding all others to eventually become the dominant group.
Besides, teenagers from 5 to 6 presented an overall increase from 24.5% in 1990 to over 25% in 2001, with the peak of 26% appearing in 1996. As for the senior group (15-19), there was a steep slump initially before 1994, bottoming out at around 23%. However, the following six years saw a moderate recovery, which amounted to 25% in 2001.
